The Simpsons are a staple in American culture as much as Apple Pie and iPhones. As one of the longest running prime-time animated series, The Simpsons has given a whole generation of 40-somethings vocabulary like: NO WAY MAN!, AY CARAMBA, and EAT MY SHORTS, MAN. Out of the decades of skits, Duff beer, and TV watching, the one thing I remember most is Troy McClure. He was a man ahead of his time with personal branding.
Troy McClure would show up about every 8 to 10 episodes with his famous line: “You May Remember Me From…” With Social Media we are all Troy McClure in one way or form. How many of us have Googled our name to see what would come up? I am either a real estate person or a very successful IT Director at VMware.
What are people going to know about YOU online? The best way to know the answer to that question is to do just that: Google it. Here are 3 tips for keeping tabs of what is being said about you online.
- Setup a Google Alert to notify you anytime something is posting with your name online. This can be customized to real-time or weekly.
- You can personally control your privacy settings in your social media feeds (Facebook, Twitter, etc..)
- If you are an active user of social media or blogging, control the content that goes out about you. Optimize your blogs or posts to control your own personal brand.
The fact that Troy McClure was remembered for everything from “The Revenge of Abe Lincoln,” to “The Erotic Adventures of Hercules” to “Dial M for Murderousness” doesn’t matter. What matters is that I remember the name Troy McClure.
