World Social Media Day: Why It Matters

Brace yourselves, folks. We’re in the midst of one of the biggest celebrations in global communications. June 30th is World Social Media Day, and Harness Digital Marketing is here for it.

You may be saying, “Don’t you guys celebrate social media everyday?” …You’re right, we do.

Whether you realized social media had a holiday of its own or not, it’s time to celebrate and reflect on its positive impact around the world. From society and culture to business and politics to our daily lives and relationships, social media has made a difference. Here’s our list of the top contributions that social media has made and why it matters to you and your business.

It has built a stronger, more interconnected community throughout the world.

I won’t deny it, this statement was inspired by Facebook’s most recent announcement and mission statement change this week: “Give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together.” Never before in history have we been more aware of what’s happening down the street and around the world.

Word is traveling and communities are being built quicker than ever before. This interconnectivity allows your business to facilitate a greater avenue of word-of-mouth, awareness, and community building.

It allows us to share what matters to us most on a greater scale.

No matter what’s important to you, you can easily and quickly find individuals who share those same passions. Everything is shareable with those around you. From businesses and causes you support, interests and hobbies, places you’ve traveled, concerts you’ve been to, family events and milestones you’ve experienced, the list goes on and on.

As a business, this gives you freedom to truly voice and share what you care about, build support around it, and inspire others to use their voice. A company I greatly respect and follow, Starbucks, does an impeccable job of this.

It celebrates the human experience.

Put all of your negative connotations of social media aside for a moment.

In a positive sense, social media allows us to celebrate life with one another. From funny baby videos to vacation photos to a delicious recipe to a great review of customer service at your favorite local coffeeshop. We all have a voice and a platform to share our experiences with one another in a positive, inspiring way.

As a business, use this platform to make your customers smile and feel inspired, whether they’re physically in your business or not. Apply a human element no matter what you’re selling, and it will go a long way online and offline.

The biggest takeaway of Social Media Day:

Whether you try to resist it or not, social media is here, and it’s here to stay. Of course, as with anything else, it has its drawbacks. However, it is up to you to use your platform for good, whether in your business or personal life. Between building communities, raising awareness, inspiring others, or relating the human experience, you have the power to make a difference.

Celebrate Social Media Day accordingly.
