Snap-what? Geo-what?

“Snap-what?” is usually the response one gets when around anyone above the age of 25, which makes sense considering that Snapchat is used mainly by those in high school and college. However, what most business owners (and adults in general) don’t understand is that Snapchat can be extremely beneficial to their business.

Let’s start out with the basics; what is Snapchat? Snapchat is a video and photo messaging application. Using the application, users can take photos, record videos, add text and drawings, and send them to a controlled list of recipients. Updates to the app have added geofilters that only appear when you’re in its geographical range. Geofilters are special overlays for Snaps that can only be accessed in certain locations. Locations and ranges of geofilters can vary based on the use and purpose of the filter. It could appear:

  • a big city in general

  • a park where an even is going on

  • or a business

Now, this may just sound cool in context, but when Snapchat added this option, they opened up a whole new world of advertising. Some may be doubting that their start-up business or small event could gain recognition from having their own Snapchat geofilter, but if your business or event could potentially target anyone from a younger generation, then creating the filter would be in you and your event/business’s best interest.

These geofilters have been used for advertising, branding, and just plain fun! Regardless of motive, they’ve been a huge hit, and businesses everywhere claim that they are seeing results after adding a geofilter for their business’s location.

Where does that leave you and your business? Well, anyone can submit a geofilter. All you have to do is create a design that meets the requirements. So, if you want to help your business -and maybe even gain a new and younger demographic while doing so -get those creative juices flowing, submit that Snapchat geofilter, and #TurnTheLightBulbOn for your business!
